What do I need to do after a grass seed installation?

Our job is to install the soil and seed in such a way that the grass will thrive and you will have a beautiful lawn. After this, the job of the client is to keep the soil watered at all times. A way to test if you're watering enough is to touch the dirt periodically throughout the day. If it is dry at any time, more water needs to be added. It is vital to the success of the installation for the client to keep the lawn watered. We do not recommend adding any more seed or fertilizers. Adding anything other than water may negatively affect the installation

We will do a 14 day inspection after the installation and instruct the client further, if required. We will also use this time to add more seed, if required. After 30 days, we will do a final inspection, and if watering was kept up, the lawn should be full and lush. Please do not mow the lawn until after 30 days.

When should I get sod or seed installation?

In our part of the world, the best time is in the Fall - between late September to early November. During this time, it is easier to keep up with watering and the new lawn does not have to compete with weeds for space.  Client must keep up with watering, regardless, so the soil does not ever dry out.

We do not recommend such installations in the summer as the client would have to get watering permits and ensure watering for 24 hours a day! Weeds that thrive in the summer would also make it more difficult for the lawn to establish in a uniform manner.

What height do you cut the lawn?

Our mowing heights are as follows:
March - May: 2.25" high
June - August/September: 3.25" high
September - November: 2.25"  high

2.25" is an optimal height for the varieties of grass species in our climate. We will not cut lower due to risk of scalping and damaging our mower.

The reason we cut higher in the summer months is to promote the health of the grass so it can stay alive and compete with weeds. Cutting shorter in the summer months can kill the grass and it may not come back in the Fall. Cutting it shorter in the summer also promotes the growth of weeds as the grass is stressed. Clients asking Lilac Landscaping to cut shorter in the summer months must provide in writing that they accept the risks and still want it cut shorter.

Are there alternatives to grass lawns?

Your grass can be replaced with varieties of "creeping" thyme, depending on the location. Thyme lawns don't require the mowing and watering maintenance that grass lawns do.

Another alternative can be a simple rock garden. Please contact us for grass replacement solutions.
